The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design is one of the world’s most prestigious art schools, being synonymous with innovation and academic excellence. Its unique strength stems from the numerous breakthroughs and its ability to respond and adapt to cultural changes. BEZ focuses on innovative and creative solutions based on theory and praxis within the Architecture, Art and Industrial design.

The UNESCO Chair in ‘Urban Design and Conservation Studies’ at BEZ has been leading and promoting theoretical and applied research across the spectrum of architecture and urban design and their interaction with other disciplines especially within the activities of the World Heritage Convention. Moreover, the activities of the Chair are within the Graduate Program in ‘Urban Design’ and include previous researches in the Old City of Jerusalem as part of the UNESCO Action Plan. In addition, the Graduate Program in Urban Design collaborates with the Program in ‘Cultural Studies’ at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem that leads the field of cultural criticism in Israel.

Professor Turner holds the UNESCO Chair in Urban Design and Conservation Studies at the Bezalel Academy and has been active since 2004 leading and promoting theoretical and applied research across the spectrum of architecture and design and their interaction with other disciplines especially within the activities of the World Heritage Convention. He has researched the Old City of Jerusalem also as a team member of the UNESCO Action Plan and a current research in the archiving of the planning and architecture of Ottoman and British influences in Jerusalem between the years 1839-1959. This ongoing research is in cooperation with the Bartlett School, UCL and the Kadir Has University, Istanbul.

Shmuel Groag, an architect, town planner and conservation consultant. He graduated from the Technion in 1978 and received in 2006 MSc from the London School of Economics.

Currently a PhD candidate at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, his thesis subject is The ‘Wandering Archive’ in Contested Heritage Sites. As a senior lecturer, he heads the conservation unit in the Department of Architecture at the Bezalel Academy and also taught between 2006 and 2014 conservation management, in the Conservation MSc program at the Technion. He chairs the Israel ICOMOS Scientific Committee on Interpretation and Presentation, ICIP, and is a founding member of Bimkom-
Planners for Planning Rights. In private practice he is the senior partner at Groag-Harel Architects, Conservation & Sustainable Design, with works including the policy and conservation management for Jerusalem, the conservation of Zichron Yakov historic centre, planning policy for Allenby Street in Tel Aviv and the visitors centre of Masada.

Yoav Freidman received his Ph.D. from the Department of Politics and Government at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His doctoral research dealt with EU’s higher education policies, namely the Bologna Process and internationalization policies. He is a graduate of the European Forum MA program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and holds a BA in European History. In 2012, Dr. Friedman was a member of Bologna Training Center’s founding group – an international training center aiming at the enhancement of the harmonization between European and non-European higher education systems. Among his tasks, he coordinated an EU funded project under the Tempus framework (ESPRIT), provided workshops, organized international conferences and served as a member of the European Network for Quality Assurance in higher education as a member of the international expert’s pool.

Els Verbakel is a founding partner of Derman Verbakel Architecture and Head of the Department of Architecture at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem where she also directs the Masters Program in Urban Design, the UNESCO Chair in Urban Design and Conservation Studies at Bezalel and the Bezalel UNI Habitat Program. Els obtained a PhD in Architecture at Princeton University, a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design at GSAPP, and a Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture from the University of Leuven, Belgium

Komal Potdar is a conservation architect from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (2015) and an alumna of the Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Mumbai (2011). She has worked as an in-house consultant with the Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi. She has received Charles Wallace India Trust fellowship for continuing professional development courses in UK 2019-20, was selected as US-ICOMOS International Exchange Programme 2017, has been awarded the INTACH Heritage Academy Research Grant 2016-17 in the past. Her field of practice includes architectural conservation, World Heritage management and community participatory efforts towards cultural conservation and believes in multi-disciplinary approaches towards investigation, assessment and interventions.
