EDICULA Synthesis
The scientific and engineering achievements of the rehabilitation of the Holy Aedicule of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem were the result of the adoption of a holistic approach where Innovation served as the enabling factor in addressing the challenges of such an emblematic and complex project. Innovation, thus, is the key element for producing new knowledge. This new knowledge can be more effectively transferred to the general audience through education, instead of research.
The introduction of the concepts of sustainability and of designing through a holistic approach, both crucial for our contemporary built environment, as well as for the protection of our built heritage, assessed by appropriate techniques and methodologies, based on compatibility and performance criteria, demonstrates the necessity of scientific support to decision making for the management and addressing of problems in variable environments, under risk conditions, limited time and constraining conditions, as well as challenging social-political-religious situations.
Thus, the innovation applied in such an emblematic monument has established a new interdisciplinary field and professional profile for the sustainable protection and management of cultural heritage through digital documentation and strategic planning of interventions, that allows multispectral innovative management of data relevant to the asset’s construction, materials and history.
